ReplyDeleteAgree with you, GOOD STUFF. I like this website because it comes with other language too. I would not clearly understand if this website is not comes with other language.
DeleteThe website seems considerate to the non-English languages.
DeleteWow! This is indeed a very informative website. Its like a one-stop shop for English and Mathematical strategies/study guides. I love it! And there is even the option of viewing the site in "thirty-eight" other languages, English included. I especially love the "Writing and Vocabulary" along with "Math and Science" guides. The A.S.P.I.R.E. study system is well developed and makes for a great building block. Very neat stuff, I appreciated everything I looked into. Thank you Dr. Rivera for sharing this. Great tool all in all.
ReplyDeleteWell, yesterday's class discussions and all the mention about PTSD got me thinking about certain aspects of my deployments. I was actually diagnosed with chronic PTSD, back in 2010, as a result of 5 combat deployments, and am still required to check in every 6 months here at the Naval Hospital for evaluations. Although I have never agreed with the Army's diagnoses, hearing what others had to say about PTSD in class got me thinking about some of the things I saw, did and endured in all my deployments. Most of which I have tried to put behind me, suppress, maybe even ignore. A certain few, I would never discuss. But I got home yesterday and took out some of my journals, written on several different deployments, and I came across this entry, "Spare My Children." I'm not one to talk about my deployment experiences. I believe some things are just better left where they happened. But I was compelled to share this entry. I wrote this when I was struggling between making sense of what we were doing out there, and what I longed for in life, to be a dad. Although I've never fathered a child, I longed for the honor of being a father. And it was with those thoughts that I wrote this entry. Thought I'd share, give us something to read and reflect upon. Dr. Rivera, I hope you don't mind.
Journal Entry, April 20, 2003
DeleteI often spend many personal moments in deep thought and longing.. About home, family and love ones. Being away from home and love ones for long intervals of time weighs heavily on the heart. And as time gradually passes, I can’t help but wonder what the future holds. Not only for me, but for my own family, my children’s future. All the confusion and calamity around me only intensifies my fears, my doubts, my uncertainties.. Fear that my children may one day have to answer the call of duty. Doubts that I may not be doing enough to ensure a more peaceful future for them. Uncertain whether I should even bring a child into this world..
War is never a definite solution, only a temporary resolution. And as unfortunate as it is, it is the hand we’re dealt with. And so we strap on our boots, pick up our rifles and take the war to the enemy.. In hopes that we’ll keep such calamities distant from our shores, our front yards, our children’s futures. But often enough, when I pause and take in the chaos around me.. I can’t help but wonder, am I doing enough to ensure a brighter, more peaceful future for my children? Am I doing enough to ensure abundant room for love and hope in their future? I guess these questions will never truly be answered, until my children’s future meets mine. And so for the time being, all I can really do is commit to the duties before me - and pray.. Pray that the good Lord will spare my children’s future. And it’s with these thoughts, that the following prayer was conceived..
Journal Entry continued..
DeleteSpare My Children (A father’s war, a soldier’s prayer..)
If there should be trouble in this world Lord, let it be on my day.
If there should be war and chaos, let it be during my time..
Spare my children’s future Lord, this I humbly pray.
Let me be the one Lord, to answer the call of duty.
Let me be the one to pick up that rifle, and defend freedom.
Spare my children’s future Lord, spare them from adversary.
If there should be pain and suffering, let it be mine.
If there should be anguish in the heart, I offer my own.
Spare my children’s future Lord, let them shine.
Grant me courage and resilience, to overcome and conquer.
Grant me strength to endure Lord, to never lose hope.
Spare my children’s future Lord, that they may prosper.
If death should ever come knocking Lord, grant me serenity.
If death should ever be a necessary sacrifice, let it be my own..
Spare my children’s future Lord, grant them impartiality.
Guide me through the battlefield Lord, that I may live through each day.
Guide me through the battlefield, that I may return victorious.
Spare my children’s future Lord, this I humbly pray.
Amen

Everybody should read all three parts of this comment. This is an amazing story. As I was reading the story, I felt something deep inside me. I wasn't sure what the feeling was. I think I deeply moved story especially the end which you finished it with a poem. The poem I think is the best part, it's a great way to finish a story. Although it was unrelated to what Dr. Rivera asked us to do, it was interesting to read a 3 part comment.
DeleteThank You Alex
Alex, this entry is amazing. I loved the poem. You are a very gifted writer. Thank you for sharing.
DeleteZiggy really admired your poem. Thank you for sharing, Alex.
DeleteThat was cool. I love the effort you put into writing these. I'd love them if there was no effort at all. You're talented.
DeleteZiggy, Casi, Sukhee and Nicole.. Glad you all enjoyed the entries. Thank you for taking the time to read and share your thoughts, and your kind compliments. My experiences in the service isn't something I often talk about or share. But for some reason, this blog and our class seems comfortable enough for me to share such things with, and in. Thank you all for the kindness and respect. It is heartfelt and deeply appreciated.
DeleteWishing everyone a great weekend.. Cheers!
It is very hard to admit to having ptsd and that it is real. I was diagnosed with it from the big quake and tsunami in japan in 2011. Nothing like what you went through. It often embarrasses me that I had problems from something so insignificant compared to others but others are still having issues after the tsunami and haven't gotten help for it. I commend anyone that realizes there is something wrong with their brain and emotions.
DeleteThank you Heather.. Thank you very much! I can not put into words just how much what you've just shared means to me. Knowing that I am not alone, means the world to me. Thank you!
DeleteI found this site is useful; one-it provide in different language, two- it state the problem we as a student might have and solution, three-you can the strategy in study and other place.
ReplyDeleteI found the different language options to be incredibly helpful, too. I am glad that the website can assist people who speak languages other than English. I hope that more websites will implement different language options in the future.
DeleteYes, thanks for agree with me Christina Oh~~~~. Honestly for me, I still takes a long time to translate important word when I read something. I hope that more websites will implement different language options too. And please have a safe weekend. I can reply you this message this time because my work place closed. I can tell this time is not a kidding, cause usually we open no matter how hard is raining outside. DO NOT GO TO BEACH AND SWIM, THAT IS NOT SMART.
DeleteIt is always a great help when people can read something in their native language. Have to love technology.
DeleteI like how it has the typical problems students have and tries to improve them.
DeleteThe website was very resourceful, because I can use it as a guide to help me when I do homework or study. The website is helpful for not only English, but other subjects as well. Additionally, the website contains information on how to manage projects, which is useful. I need guidance on good time management, so I am sure the website will be advantageous to use. Hopefully, I will remember to view it when I need assistance for work.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely use this site as a guide when I need help doing a project, taking a test, and the future subjects I take at UOG. It was very resourceful for me because everything I need to know to become a successful student was in this site. I will definitely go back to it when I need guidance.
DeleteI agree with you! If only I was informed about this site in high school. You can get so much information out of this webpage.
DeleteSQ3R was resourceful for me, because I am bad at reading. From this point I can use the strategy from this website when I reding.
DeleteIt does serve as a guide for homework. I could use this site for my history class too.
DeleteSince I picked a major that requires intense math and science, I had to check out the guide for Math and Science on the website. I found it to extremely resourceful. The word problems were like a review for a class I took in session A. It had tips for different types of test. All in all, I’m bookmarking this page for future reference.
ReplyDeleteI agree Ziggy. There's no doubt I will go back to site for reference. It can help me with any subject I take.
DeleteI like how it isn't only a site for language. It has variety.
DeleteYes, the variety was definitely a plus!
DeleteThis website is very informative and I really like it. Because there are many another language, I can look at it in Korean when I do not understand some study guides and strategies.
ReplyDeleteI agree having the option to view it in ones native language is always a huge help. I couldn't imagine studying in a language other than my native.
DeleteThis site has everything a person needs to be academically successful. Of course, they would need the one thing to ignite it all; motivation. I'm glad I got to discover it right before my senior year of high school. I'm also glad because my strategies in studying and test taking are mediocre, and I could definitely up my game academically this up coming school year.
ReplyDeleteI am bookmarking this website for future use in my college classes. I am also a math and science person so seeing the review of math is going to be a useful tool.
ReplyDeleteWow! where are you finding these useful sites. It was definitely a big help. I will book mark this when my computer starts working again. If anyone knows how to fix a mac please let me know.
