DeleteWe should avoid run-on sentences because it makes the reader confused. A run-on sentence is a sentence with two or more main clauses without correct punctuation. Run-on sentences must be avoided because it won't make your essay flow properly. I do tend to write run-on sentences but today's lesson helped me learn how to use correct punctuation to make my sentence clear and grammatically correct. In today's reading discussed how we should use all three stages of the writing process to write a developmental paragraph. The writing process will help a writer write a concise developmental paragraph.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. To make your sentences flow properly, use the correct punctuation.
DeleteJonah, you are right. It does aid in helping your essay flow. The webpage we were given to read was very resourceful!
DeleteI agree that run-on sentences are very distracting. I love listening to and reading my students' papers. They are cute when they run-on but of course we correct them. I like to see the progress as they learn.

DeleteAvoiding run-on sentences are important in becoming a successful writer. A run-on sentence is a sentence with two or more main clauses that run together without the proper punctuation. One should avoid run-on sentences when writing because in order to write, one must master the fundamentals of the language. Run-on sentences detracts a writer from his/her writing and leaves the reader confused. Today's activities in class involved Moodle and daily blogging. Also, I was able to peer review my classmate's essay and finalize my essay.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Run-on sentences leave the reader confused and it doesn't get the writers point across. In order to become a successful writer, one must use correct punctuation so they will avoid run-on sentences.
DeleteWord. It will lead to confusion and the sentence would be out of focus.
DeleteWell all basic grammar rules help us become good writers. Run-on sentences tend to be hard for everyone.
DeleteWriters should definitely avoid run-on sentences. To become an effective writer, one has to master punctuation, and run-on sentences are an obstacle to correct punctuation. Meanwhile, the writer cannot spot run-on sentences easily at times, so peer editing ensures that run-on sentences will be corrected.
DeleteRun-on sentences confuse the reader and can be hard to avoid when writing an essay. I am guilty of writing Run-on's in my paragraphs, so I am glad that we are going over this before the All about me essay is due.
DeleteI am sure Jonah did it for your peer review.
Deleterun-on sentences are two sentences connected by commas or semicolons, but it has to be separated sentences. In order to connect two independent clauses, we should use the conjunction. We have to avoid run-on sentences because it can make audiences and readers confused. Today I went to our classroom, and nobody was there. I realized why we have to see the syllabus for this class.
ReplyDeleteI agree run-on sentences make the reader confused and lost in the reading. Appropriate punctuation can fix run-on sentences.
Deleteohh no sorry you went to class. We don't meet in class all week. I agree on the confusion with run-on sentences.
DeleteAs I was growing up, my former teachers taught me to avoid run-on sentences because they were improper. They use more than two sentences. Also, as you read, you will lose your breath while reading. It can confuse the readers and audiences if you were the one reading to them.
ReplyDeleteWe did not meet today, but I am finally reading my book. I am laughing out loud.
I agree when a reader reads a run-on sentence they tend to get confused and out of breath. My teachers always taught me to avoid run-on sentences but I tend to still write them in my essays.
DeleteI have to watch run-ons as well in my writing.
DeleteThat is true. Reading run-on sentences aloud causes one to lose their breath. I learned to avoid run-on sentences since elementary.
DeleteRun-on sentences are definitely confusing to the audience. Run-on sentences are a cluttered mixture of two or more sentences that should be separated. When the audience reads run-on sentences, I think that they see the cluttered mess of a sentence rather than the message of a sentence.
DeleteCan't run-on sentences be avoided using proper punctuation?
DeleteMy old classmate in EN085 had that mistake a lot, and everyone got confused in that class whenever he read a book.
DeleteAvoiding a run- on sentence is a good thing. You could end up with one entire paragraph, that is only one sentence. I find them confusing as well because sometimes the main idea trails off.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Run-on sentences tend to detract the writing from the topic. That is the problem with run-on sentences.
DeleteRun-on sentences confuse me at times, because they do not seem to make sense at times. I think that run-on sentences do not make sense at times, because one idea elaborates into many ideas. Run-on sentences should be avoided by writing concise sentences with one idea in mind.

DeleteFunny thing about run-on sentences is that they are easily picked up by readers, yet sometimes hard to pick up by writers. I find that rather ironic.
DeleteEven in high school, people continue to write these kinds of sentences. We should have learned by elementary - middle school how to correct these types of mistakes. I agree with Alex though! It's pretty ironic.
DeleteI agree with you. You compacting all this information into one sentence while you could expand the information and create a paragraph instead.
DeleteRun on sentence should be avoided because it is improper. When you read a run on sentence you could lose the reader because there are to many ideas in one sentence. Typically a run on sentence contain one or more ideas within one sentence. If it is one idea it is describe in multiple ways.
ReplyDeleteToday in class we reviewed Vera's essay and how it changed thanks to the Writing Process Worksheet.
Run-on sentences should be avoided, because they cause confusion to the audience. For example, the writers will know what they are writing about, but the audience will probably not understand the writers' message. Furthermore, a run-on sentence can inhibit the audience from being able to read clearly or from being entertained. Additionally, reading, similar to speaking, needs pauses at certain times, and run-on sentences prevent effective and clear speaking. Without pauses in writing, every sentence will be a cluttered mess. In addition, we did not meet for today's class. However, on Moodle, we discussed the Writing Process Worksheet, which is useful for organization.

DeleteThat is a great explanation.
DeleteI always have a problem with run-on sentences. When I'm thinking there are no pauses, so when I'm writing it sound exactly how it did in my head. I will try my hardest to not do run-ons. Not having to go to class is hard because I always forget I'm still suppose to be doing something online.
ReplyDeleteI think my problem is that I write run-on sentences yet think they're correct because I use so many commas. Having class online isn't as time consuming as regular class but I forget we have class at all when we have class online.
DeleteI am sure that most people like traditional class than online.
DeleteI do the same. My ideas get mashed up into one.

ReplyDeleteIn addition, it is common to people who are careless. Thank you Ziggy.
DeleteThis is rather humorous because it has happened to me once. Where two separate ideas intertwined in a run-on sentence and produced a completely unintended perception of what was being discussed. Indeed, they should be avoided.
DeleteRight, sometimes run-on sentences are misinterpreted.
DeleteRun-on sentences can be perplexing when being read. They do not inform the reader where an idea stops. Sometimes, run-on sentences can mean something other than it was intended for. We discussed the writing process worksheet.
ReplyDeleteYes, the run-on sentences do not inform the reader where the idea stops.
DeleteRun-on sentences are tricky especially when freewriting, because usually you want to get the ideas out of your head all at once, and it all ends up in one sentence. Today's class was on moodle and we had to react to the writing process worksheet
ReplyDeleteRun-on sentences are indeed tricky. If one is not careful in their composition, one subject often flows into another, which can be rather confusing for the readers.
DeleteWhen I free write I do the same thing. But you realize that it is just free writing and you can always go back and edit.
DeleteRun-on sentences should be avoided not only because they are improper, but also because they are very confusing to readers. There is also the fact that there are times when 2 main-clauses are improperly ran together, the outcome is something entirely off the subject of what is being discussed. Personally, I think Run-on sentences can be avoided if we try not to write in the same manner as we speak.
ReplyDeleteToday's class was aimed at our own reflections on and critique of, Vera's essay and the resourcefulness of the Writing Process Worksheet.
