An argumentative essay is a essay that persuades the reader to agree with the writers argument. It is a essay that establishes a position or argument about a topic. The topic I selected would be I would advocate that every American child should receive at least two years of public schooling before graduating high school. I selected this because homeschool kids need at least two years of public schooling so they could know what it is like to interact with other people. In today's activities we did free writing and its my favorite kind of writing. Free writing helps me put all my main ideas down on paper.
ReplyDeleteI am going to provide a counter to your topic. I homeschooled my kids for 8 yrs and my children are the most social people some of my friends have ever met. They can interact with people in everyday life. I feel homeschooling provides the children to actually think for themselves and learn at their pace. Homeschooling is not just about learning core subjects, it is learning about life and how to interact with people in life settings.
DeleteHeather, there is any offence to you, and I think your kids are the best. However, America is 7th of the illiteracy rate country in the world. I guess it is because from the many poverty people. Anyways, I support with Jonah's topic.
DeleteAnother way I think an argumentative essay can be put together is having two topics in your essay and providing its relations and differences. Also, having the read have their own opinions and conclusions. You would get these essays in articles of politics and other papers involving government reports. Also, in senatorial debates.
ReplyDeleteYou do have both sides of your argument in your essays, but you are trying to convince the reader to sway to your side of the argument. You typically make you opinion more convincing.
DeleteAn argumentative essay is about persuading readers that you are giving a supporting ideas, and opposing ideas in essay.I selected "Drivers in the state of Minnesota who are over 70 years old must pass an annual test for eyesight and physical ability before they can renew their driver's license." in the argumentative topics listed. All the countries in the world have to apply this law because many old people had car accidents actually. Today, we studied about CLUESS. It is guide for revising essays. It will be helpful whenever I write a draft.
ReplyDeleteAn argumentative essay is an essay wherein the writer is to research and 'investigate' a certain topic thoroughly and establish their position, usually whether they agree or disagree. Argumentative essays aren't exactly my favorite genre, mainly because I can never totally agree or establish a position on a topic and back it up with evidence without thinking of something to contradict it. The topic that I would choose would be the topic about every state enabling a divorce counseling law requiring couples to go to couples therapy before being granted a divorce. I'd choose this topic because it's pretty interesting. Although I think couples should attend couples counseling before considering divorce, not all couples are the same. For example, one person could be abusing the other, or their children, and couples therapy wouldn't exactly help that situation. I think the decision to attend couples therapy should be one that the couple makes.
ReplyDeleteI think that argumentative essays can be pretty difficult. I agree that argumentative essays could be challenging to write, because the writer has to address both sides of an argument. The writer cannot just argue for a point, but also has to argue why the other side of the argument is incorrect.
DeleteYes, argumentative essays can be difficult to write; but I think that they are interestingly difficult to write. Challenging, but interesting.
DeleteThe topic you chose is rather interesting too, Nickie. Way to think outside the box, as in the norm.
You and Christina both are right about how this particular essay is difficult due to the fact that you'd have to explain both sides of an argument. What is worse is when you're assigned a topic and don't even agree with the winning argument.
DeleteAn argumentative essay is a type of essay that provides a sufficient amount of research needed to support and establish a point of a topic. It is similar to a persuasive essay. The goal of an argumentative essay is to persuade the reader to agree with the writer. When writing an argumentative essay, your facts and evidence must connect to prove your thesis with logical transitions throughout the essay's body paragraphs. The argumentative topic I have selected in the list of topics provided is advocating that every American child should receive at least two years of public schooling before graduating from high school. I selected this topic because it is important that every child should have a taste of a school environment with their peers in order to properly mature and grow.
ReplyDeleteDuring class, we discussed stage three of the writing process. I was able to share my first rough draft of my experience at my favorite concert. I believe that rough drafts give me the chance to gather my thoughts and focus on what is really important to have in my paper. It gives me an idea about how I will structure my essay. Aside from today's lesson, I also enjoyed reflecting on the photo I chose for my brain stretcher today.
An argumentative essay shares similarities with an expository essay. Although, with an argumentative essay, a lot more research and pre-writing is involved. Argumentative essays are also lengthier than expository essay's. In analyzing all four major essays, I conclude that argumentative essay's are written in the most detailed and factual manner. Involving a wealth of investigated and expounded information concerning the topic discussed. Argumentative essay's are composed in a persuasive manner, aimed to have it's readers poised on the essay's topic as being dominant.
ReplyDeleteIn choosing an argumentative topic, I'd choose "We should develop some sort [what sort?] of internet censorship. Not all free expression
is protected by the First Amendment." And I'd choose this simply because internet censorship and free speech are becoming a frequent issue in society today; without any clear guidelines as to how they may be resolved.
Class today was a handful, trying to multitask proved a bit challenging. But I enjoyed it. The activities and challenges kept me on my toes and I did learn quite a lot. Although most of which were simple refreshers, they were all very much needed.
I was also having trouble multitasking today. I couldn't pay attention to what was going on.
DeleteI agree with you, Alex. The lessons we learned today really help refresh my mind. I feel as if our entire computer row was trying to multitask and get our work done.
DeleteI agree indeed Casiana, our entire computer row was, hands-down, multitasking. For a while, all I heard was the click-clacking of keypads..
DeleteAn argumentative essay is one that requires the student to research and collect data whether it be from interviews or surveys. Also, like any other essay, it must have a clear thesis.
ReplyDeleteFor my argumentative topic, I would choose: The birth control pill is more dangerous than the medical community has led us to believe and should be removed from general consumption. I chose this topic because birth control is in fact dangerous and according to statistics, it has presented an increased risk of blood clots.
In today's class, we went over stage three of the writing process. We also learned the guide to revising (CLUESS) and editing (CGPS) and I found it very useful because it helps me organize the elements of writing an essay.
I found the guide to revising and editing very useful too because when I write future essays it will help me revise my work. Today's lesson will make my essays have less grammatical errors.
DeleteBrittney, I agree with you. I believe that these guides will become very useful and convenient when writing essays and revising. I would love to hear your argumentative essay given your topic of choice.
DeleteI found the guides to revising and editing useful as well. I can use CLUESS and CGPS to help me revise my drafts in an easier manner. I am sure that by using stage three of the writing process, I will become a better writer.
DeleteBrittney,
DeleteThanks for reminding me that we could use CLUESS and CGPS. I just did like three different drafts and got stuck in the middle of many different topics. So, I am finally on my official satisfying paper and plan to use CLUSS and CGPS as I further write to finish my paper.
Thanks for the reminder indeed. I've forgotten about CLUESS and CGPS. I've got to keep that in mind.
DeleteCLUESS and CGPS are basically outlines on editing and revising. I agree with Dr. Rivera about how our work always has room for improvement, and editing and revising, although time consuming, will help with that.
DeleteI like that we got to learn about CLUESS and CGPS. I have never here of those acronyms for editing.
DeleteAn argumentative essay I think I may be good at. I like to argue and prove that my thought is right. I did not see a list of topics for the Argumentative essay. I was too busy writing my essay due next week and the discipline of children rough draft.
ReplyDeleteI think that since you like to rage and prove your point you will write a good argumentative essay. This tells me that you are good at convince people since you can prove your thoughts.
DeleteAn argumentative essay is similar to the expository essay, because both requires the writer to argue for or against a point. Furthermore, they are similar in the aspect that both requires research. However, the argumentative essay is different from the expository essay, as the argumentative essay requires much more research, work, and could be seen as a more "serious" genre than the expository essay. The topic I would choose is either "Every state should enact a divorce counseling law that requires married couples to go through counseling before being granted a divorce," or "We should outlaw genetically modified foods until further research can be done to see if these foods affect the environment or us." I would choose these topics, because I feel as if divorce should not be as easily granted to couples as they are now, and genetically modified foods have the potential to greatly harm us.
ReplyDeleteIn today's class, we learned about the third stage of writing. For the third stage of writing, we are required to revise our work. We learned that we can use the acronym CLUESS to make the revision process easier. I am glad that we went through the revision process in depth, as I needed clarity on certain aspects of revision. Meanwhile, I am glad that I learned the difference between an expository and argumentative essay, because I did not know the difference between them previously.
I agree, I'm glad we went through the revision process because it refreshed my mind. I have a hard time revising my work and today's lesson helped me understand what I need to do in revising my work.
DeleteI'm glad we went over the third stage of writing as a class. Learning the difference between an expository essay and argumentative essay really cleared things up for me. It would be interesting to hear insight about genetically modified foods.
DeleteStrategy can use when writing an essay.
ReplyDelete1. Different tone we can use in essay- word choices
2. First draft, revision, editing
First draft- write down an idea that comes out of your mind, and do not mind the grammar yet.
revision- put the ideas together to make it sense
editing- check grammar, punctuation, comma splice etc.
Improving the word choice- read more book, bro ///
This is a nice way of looking at the list. thank you.
DeleteI like how you listed the stages of the writing process we learned so far. I think your list is comprehensive and to the point, which is useful when I need to know the stages of the writing process. Your list makes remembering the writing process easier.
DeleteI like how you took a different approach to this blog by listing what you gathered in class. Its a refreshing approach.
DeleteIt is easier way to look at the statement. I like it.
DeleteTone is very important in when you are writing something. Always be aware of your tone because you don't want other people to get mixed messages.
DeleteArgumentative essay is basically as it states an argument. It differs from an expository essay because argumentative essays are backed profoundly with research and pre-writing. Also it may require surveys and experiments. I believe that every essay is an argument or a persuasive writing assignment. Besides this i liked today's activity when we were acting the way humorous, over bearing, or angry dialogues.
ReplyDeleteI like researching and having concrete evidence. I feel it is easier than writing about my opinion on something.
DeleteI agree every essay has an argument. Every writer tries to persuade the reader to agree with his or her ideas or argument. I also like todays activities when we were acting because it brought out our classmates personalities.
DeleteI had a difficult time with the activity today because I don't believe I am comfortable or confident enough to be goofy around you all. I also do horrible impressions and accents.
DeleteAccording to the pdf linked above, The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic;
ReplyDeletecollect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.
The topic I would write about would be "We should initiate a national health insurance program in the United States and model the
program on successful ones used in Europe [or Canada]".
The reason for my decision is that I worked as an intern at FHP as a part of my nursing class program for GCC. I understand a lot from the perspective of the patients and some of their struggles that include their struggle in finance.
Nicole, I could not agree more. Having a health insurance stabilizes or helps struggling patients in regards to their finance.
DeleteI agree that we should have a national health insurance program in the United States, because not everyone can afford health care. I think one of the reasons as to why it has not been established in the United States is because people do not want their taxes to be raised. However, if the government adjusts their budget, I think that the United States would eventually be able to afford national health insurance for its citizens.
DeleteHealth insurance is indeed a much needed topic of discussion simply because we all depend on it. I like you topic of choice, although I wouldn't know where to begin if I were to write about it.
DeleteIt is always easy to make structure of essay if you know about something a lot. It is good for you write about national health insurance.
DeleteArgumentative essays are one-sided debate essays. The argumentative essays are really hard to write. We have to write precise details, examples, the analysis of cause and effect, etc. I really have hard time writing an argumentative essay. Today in class, we did a rough draft.
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time writing an argumentative essay as well. I have a hard time making my point clear and trying to persuade the reader. I have a hard time making an argument about a topic.
DeleteWord. It's almost like a persuasive essay.
DeleteArgumentative essays are essays that give the writer the opportunity to express their position based on facts. I might write about how raising the drinking age had little to do with the crimes associated with alcohol intoxication.
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to read about the research on this topic. Argumentative essays are commonly known for its structure based on facts. Your explanation is short, yet clear.
DeleteIf I read your essay on that topic, I would probably just nod and agree with whatever I would be reading. I don't believe age has anything to do with crimes. Age doesn't matter because maturity and responsibility does.
DeleteArgumentative essay is a writing style (of form) in which the writer persuades its audience to agree provided that it has evidence. For my argumentative essay, I would choose "We should outlaw genetically modified foods until further research........", because eating modified foods will only shorten your life even more.
ReplyDeleteToday's agenda was great. We learned about writing, revising, and editing.
Argumentative essay is a essay where you tried to get the readers to agree with your point of view. A argumentative essay is like a lawyer trying to get the jury to believe that their client is innocent. Having Anabelle as a daughter makes you really good at arguing. Anabelle may only be 1 1/2 , but she argues like she's 20. I can argue , but argumentative essays are not my favorite essays.
ReplyDeleteThe essay I would choose is:
Drivers in MN [or nationwide] should not be permitted to use cell phones while driving
(talking and/or texting). I would choose this essay because it's super essay to argue with. I would choose this essay because I'm a super safe driver and I believe that most accidents can be prevented.
I sometimes look at my phone while I was driving, and I have to fix my bad habit.
DeleteAn argumentative essay is also known as a persuasive essay. In this essay you try to express your view points usually with some facts. When you write this essay you try to persuade your readers to you views.
ReplyDeleteToday in class we started on a rough draft and how to edit them. To edit the drafts we us clues and cgps.
