An expository essay is a type of essay that argues for or against a point. An expository essay is the essay that is commonly found in college assignments. The expository essay is different from the descriptive and narrative essay, because the writer has to actively argue for a point, instead of just passively informing or entertaining the audience. Additionally, I would choose the topic of why parents are sometimes strict or the major stressors in teens' lives. I would choose these topics, because I have experience and knowledge in both topics, as my parents and former teachers have explained to me why parents can be strict, and I have various stresses in my daily life.
ReplyDeleteIn today's class, we learned more about the second stage of writing. We learned how to organize our thoughts to make a comprehensive thesis using a topic sentence. We can organize our thoughts by using various methods, such as listing, clustering, and outlining. My preferred method of organizing my thoughts is outlining. I prefer outlining, because I like developing from one point into multiple parts in a visually clear way.
I think being a visual learner is why bubble cluster model is better for me. It always amazes me how different we all learn. This is what is wrong with a lot of our schools today.
DeleteI prefer outlining as well. Outlining helps me put all my thoughts together and it helps me organize. Outlining helps me develop my essay because it acts as a guide for me.
DeleteChristina, you are a very in-depth person. I enjoy reading you blog's and seeing how you go into details explaining your views. You are very thorough, and that is something to be appreciated.
DeleteI love outlining and the contribution it makes in writing. It keeps the sequence of the ideas organized.
DeleteAn expository essay is written around an idea, and is evaluated through evidence provided by the writer, expanding the idea, and setting a clear and concise argument that contrasts the pros and cons, and analyzes the causes and effects of the idea.
ReplyDeleteThe expository topic that I would choose would be how music effects your life, because music affects everyone's life, even people who hate music (although I can't imagine anyone who hates any kind of music, since there are so many genres and sub-genres). I'd choose it because music has definitely affected my life and experience is a great starting point for writing a paper, instead of writing about something you know nothing about.
I enjoyed today's class, not only because I like taking pictures, but because the activities we did made me like writing outlines a bit more than usual.
I do not like outlines. It's almost like rules. I don't like rules or the conforming of myself to others standards. I like to do everything my way.
DeleteI agree that music affects everyone's life. I know that music has affected my life greatly, as music has the tendency to make me happier than I would usually be at sad moments in my life. Additionally, I agree that an expository essay expands the idea of the thesis.
DeleteMusic is a huge part of my life. The music I listen to defines who I am. Outlining aids in pulling out important details and major parts of my topic.
DeleteI like the simplicity in your explanation, that an "expository essay is written around an idea, and is evaluated through evidence provided by the writer, expanding the idea, and setting a clear and concise argument that contrasts the pros and cons, and analyzes the causes and effects of the idea."
DeleteSimple, yet thorough and to the point.
I tried to finish this exercise for class and completely drew a blank. I tried so hard and started to get some anxiety with it. I felt the tears starting to well up. That is when I decided to just communicate that I was having problems with it. I know the way I learn and they way I write. It felt good to have a teacher understand and help me feel better about it.
ReplyDeleteI think that communication is a better way to learn than just reading from a textbook, as communication clears up any confusion about a subject. With communication in learning, people can eliminate misunderstanding and ensure that what they learned is correct, or even learn more about a subject in another way. I agree that everyone has their own way of learning and writing, as I have methods of learning and writing that widely differs from another person's preferred methods of learning and writing.
DeleteCommunication is important in this class. Outlines are not my favorite part of writing, but today's exercises really helped today. To me, It's basically just pulling out the important parts to create your body paragraphs.
DeleteIt takes me a while as well to know what to write. I came up many blanks till I finally came to a result.
DeleteA expository essay is a essay that informs a reader. The writer has to make an argument or investigates a specific topic. A expository essay states facts about a topic. The expository topic I selected is explain why you admire a particular person. In today's activities we did outlining. I struggle in making outlines because I have a hard time putting all my information about a topic in a outline. Today's activities were helpful and good practice for me.
ReplyDeleteI also struggle with the outlines and wish it would come easier to me.
DeleteAn expository essays are not really my favorite types of essay. Outlining is helping is putting your thoughts on paper. The exercises in class were also good practice for me.
DeleteI want to hear who particular person you admire soon.
DeleteTo help organize an expository essay you should outline it first. This way you have some idea of how to structure you essay
DeleteAn expository essay demonstrates knowledge on a certain topic. It is more of a factual essay than an opinionated essay. An expository essay contains a clear background, argument and road map, followed by body paragraph with appropriate details and supporting evidence. This type of essay is one of the most complex essays to write. The expository topics I would select would be why teens join gangs and the consequences of doing poorly in school. During today's class, we were given exercises on completing outlines and writing our own outlines from previously used topics. After, we ended our class with our daily brain stretcher.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement. expository essays are the most complicated essays. I think the writers are required professionalism.
DeleteMaybe I am not familiar with writing this kind of essay due to the fact that I think expository essays are pretty easy considering you just have to take facts and put them in a sequence to prove a point. However, I prefer essays that are opinionated because I enjoy opinions, reading them, hearing them, writing them, so much more than plain and boring facts. It's nice to see from other people's perspectives and how they perceive things.
DeleteIn an expository essay you give true factual information about the subject you are writing about. When you write a expository essay you do research to find in your information in your essay. Usually in an expository essay you do many intent citation because your have to quote the researchers work that you are using. Among the topic to write a expository essay I would have to pick explain why parents are sometimes strict.
ReplyDeleteWriting an outline helps me organize my thoughts. Outline are ment to help people write their essays, but I find it a waist of time.
If I had to choose between outlines and bubble clusters, I prefer the bubble clusters. You can just add a bubble anywhere you want. Little bubbles are more fun to look at as well.
DeleteWriting outlines helps me organize my thoughts as well. I find outlines very useful though in writing my essays. It guides me through my topic.
DeleteAlways quote or at the least write the references in the end. When you avoid those thing, it considered plagiarism.
DeleteI think the most difficult thing about writing this essay is the research part.
DeleteAn expository essay requires you and explanation of your topic it has to be detailed and be persuasive or make a good argument. You need to do detailed investigation or research and have background or back it up with detailed information. Make sure it is clear and vivid and has a clear message. Besides that today's activities really helps with supporting details for your topic sentence, and topic outlines are great exercise to improve that skill.
ReplyDeleteToday's activities helped me come up with supporting details for my topic sentence as well. The activities we did in class helped me improve in writing outlines.
DeleteI do not think it needs a persuasive part because it is about explanation.
DeleteToday, we learned about outlining, and we did some exercises. I got to know how to make it, such as, I need major supports and minor supports. Also, there are different kinds of outlining. For example, narration, exemplification, analysis by division, process analysis, and cause and effect. It helped me how to make better outline now.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I am really bad at outlining that every time when I write an essay, I jump from here to there that even me confuse about what am I writing about. After today's class I think I should use this strategy more often.
DeleteToday's class taught me how to make a better outline. Before this class, I did not really know the best way to make an outline, so today's class provided me with great information about outlines. I did not know that major supports and minor supports were needed when creating outlines before today's class.
DeleteExpository essay how to explain objectively. The subjective idea can not be written in expository essay. It is different as persuasive essays. I choose "Explain why teens wear makeup" for my expository topic. women have a right to be a beautiful.
DeleteThe different types of outlining expand the definition of organization.
DeleteI suggest that when you write your expository essay you should outline your information.
DeleteOh expository essay, how I love you. You make everything so much easier. You have an idea and you grow on that idea. like building a house, you start with a strong floor and you build on that. In class today, we started with a main idea and we gave supporting details. I would select the topic "If you had to be an animal, which would you be and why?" I feel like its a good topic and I can really build on it.
ReplyDeleteSame for me. In four major essay, expository essay will be the easiest and funnest essay I will write about. And I like your writing style, it remind me when I write my journal.
DeleteI love writing expository essays as well. I like writing informative essays because I get to write facts about one specific topic.
DeleteI really like your analogy of relating building a house to writing an expository essay. I agree that writing an expository essay is similar to building a house, because if the writer does not have a strong foundation, or thesis, then the writer will not have a strong building, or argument. Furthermore, if the writer does not have a strong thesis, then he or she will have nothing to really build on.
DeleteYou have the perfect analogy to explain an expository essay. An expository essay would not exist without a main idea and supporting details.
DeleteGreat comparison, but building a house ain't easy.
DeleteA very passionate and personal blog. I like the change of pace and your expressive composition. Well said.
DeleteI have a question. Isn't it more about descriptive that Jessica wrote?
DeleteMany people do thing expository essay are the easiest, due to the fact you mostly just quote other peoples work. Make sure you do your intent citations in your essay.
DeleteLooking at expository essay's definition and the topics given to in the paper, I had an easy time to choose one that I will write about. The topic I choose is "explain why you admire a particular person." Rather than other topic, I choose this topic to write my essay because I have a lot of supporting detail for why I admire the person. And since I have an idea what I am going to write about, I will have easier time to follow direction of "How to write an expository essay."
ReplyDelete"Why you admire a particular person?" is great topic because you should already know that person very well which makes the essay very interesting.
DeleteWow, that's actually a really good topic for an essay like this.
DeleteAn expository essay is written to which requires the reader to find an idea, evidence, expound on the idea, and set an argument which concerns that idea in a clear way. This can be done through comparing and contrasting, definition, example, the analysis of cause and effect.
ReplyDeleteI like all the listing of examples you used to set an arguments in a clear way. I would mostly go with examples and the analysis of cause and effect.
DeleteI like how you used the word "requires" to emphasize what was or should be important for the reader to seek out.
DeleteAn expository essay are mostly used for scientific research. I think this my most preferred essay. Students whose major are in STEM field, like myself will have to master how to write an expository essay. We worked on the outline which was very helpful. It helped me organize my main ideas and the supporting details
ReplyDeleteAn expository essay provides information about whatever topic the essay is on. I wasn't in class today so I don't know what activities you all did, but based on your posts, I can conclude that it had to deal with outlines. Therefore, I shall write my opinion on outlines.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of outlining because it makes everything so organized. It makes knowing what to write in what sequence so much easier. However, outlining takes more effort and I'm a lazy writer. I'm one of those students who "have potential but are lazy". I know that isn't a good thing but I execute when it's necessary to do so.
Expository essay's can also be termed as investigative writing. Wherein the writer's composition is based on an idea that is thoroughly investigated and expanded upon. A lot similar to news reporting. Expository essay's are meant to "expose" and idea in a clear and concise manner, often forbidding opinion and focusing more on proven facts/logic.
ReplyDeleteTypo: Expository essay's are meant to "expose" an idea in a clear and concise manner, often forbidding opinion and focusing more on proven facts/logic
DeleteAs for which topic I would chose to write an expository essay on, I'd choose to "Explain why parents are sometimes strict." And I'd choose this simply because my parents were strict parents and I butted heads with them a lot growing up. But I have now come to appreciate their strict parenting when I was growing up. Especially now that I am a bit older and hopefully a bit wiser as well.
DeleteOverall class was rather informative. I was a bit lost in the beginning but I gradually caught on. I think that class participation was rather enthusiastic today.
