  1. The main thing we went over today was topic sentences and I am glad we did. This is a huge area of weakness for me.

    1. I agree with you Heather. Throughout my four years of high school, forming a thesis sentence was the most difficult area of writing for me. Today's exercises were a huge help.

    2. I have trouble writing topic sentences too. My topic sentences tends to be broad and not to the point. Today's class was good practice for me.

    3. I'm not gonna lie. Whenever I had to do an essay for my english class, I would always google thesis sentence or "how to's" because I was never so sure.

    4. I have trouble writing a good topic sentence. I usually don't make them distinct enough.

  2. A narrative essay is similar to a descriptive essay in the aspect that both essays are related to storytelling. A narrative essay is a type of essay that requires the writer to not just tell a story, but also requires the writer to engage the audience in the writer's story. Additionally, the narrative essay is an opportunity for the writer to compose an essay that will tell his or her point of view on a certain subject or tell his or her side of the story. If I were to pick a topic, I would choose an encounter that changed my life, the breakup of a friendship, or an act of heroism or cowardice. I would choose these topics, because I have experiences that relate to these topics that would ensure that I would right an accurate and interesting story.

In today's class, we learned about the second stage of writing. The lesson today was both refreshing, as I had learned some aspects of the lesson previously, and insightful, as I had learned aspects of writing today that I did not know about before. One aspect of writing I did not know before was that ideas or topic sentences could be separated into the subject and focus. Meanwhile, I thought that the textbook could have been clearer as to which topics are ineffective and which topics are effective. Also, I thought that the activities today were effective in the way that they reinforced the lesson well.

    1. I do not care for this textbook. I am actually confused more when I read it. I have been just looking online and learning from different online sources.

    2. Narrative essays allow the writer to write about a topic from his or her perspective or personal experience. You can write about almost anything and everything that involves a sequence of events when writing a narrative essay. It takes me a while to grasp the information within the textbook also. It is only after exercises where I do understand the material.

  3. A narrative essay is an essay wherein the writer tells a story, including "an introduction, a plot, characters, settings, a climax, and conclusion." Narrative essays are fun but hard to write because I usually want to add more as I try to remember the experience. The topic that I would choose would be my first visit to the country, or the Philippines, since Guam isn't that big. I would want to write about my first visit to the Philippines because I ended up staying there for two years. My first impression was different than what I think when I visit now.

I enjoyed today's class because I enjoyed the brain-stretcher activity and writing about the Philippines.

    1. I agree with Nicole narrative essays are fun because they tell a story about your experience. Narrative essays tells us about a writers experience and we get to know the writer.

    2. Narrative essays tell stories to the audience, and they should include all the elements of a story. If narrative essays did not have the elements of a story, then they would be confusing and incredibly difficult to follow. I agree that narrative essays are difficult to write, because they usually include a vast amount of details that cannot fit into one story at times.

    3. I agree, a narrative essay encompasses most, if not all, the general elements of story-telling. I believe this is one of the reasons why narrative essays are fun to read.

  4. A narrative essay tells a story. Narration is the most innate mode of writing to humans. A narrative essay does not always have to be the absolute truth. When writing a narrative essay, one must write based on sequence of events. A narrative essay must always have a point and a consistent point of view. A topic I would select on the list of topics provided is "a memorable journey." When writing about a memorable journey, I would know to only pull out events that support the topic. During class, we were given exercises on how to write strong thesis sentences. Aside from the the writing exercises, we had our usual brain stretcher.

    1. I agree with Casi narrative essays can be either fiction or nonfiction. Narrative essays must always have a purpose and the writer should get his or her point of view across. Todays class also helped me learn how to write a strong thesis sentence.

    2. I find it so interesting how you have all these adventures and experiences. I'm sure your narrative essay would be as intriguing as your experience with them.

  5. A narrative essay is a essay that tells a story. A narrative essay should be organized, a clear point of view, and should have a purpose. The narrative topic I selected would be all about you. In today's activities we conduced a topic sentence. Topic sentences are hard to write for me and sometimes mine gets to broad.

    4. I enjoy narrative essays as well. They are more interesting to read than other genres of essays, because narrative essays are more like stories rather than what people normally think what essays are: informative and long blocks of texts. I hope this class helps me to become a better story writer, as well.

  8. A narrative essay consists of introductions, plot, point, settings, climax, and conclusion. I believe it is writing a story with characters with speech. You must choose a setting and have a climax and conclusion. It must have a point or in other words a moral. We worked on subject and force to learn how to write more descriptive sentences instead of broad ones. We also worked on making a topic sentence that isn't to broad.

  9. A narrative essay allows someone to tell a story someone is wanting to share. When you are telling your story you should tell it in a chronological order. Among the topics for the narrative essay I think I would pick The breakup of a friendship. With this topic would come easily to me becasue I just recently graduated so I will be losing most of my friends soon. Also being apart of the military I have to move and lose many friends.

Today in class we entered into stage two of writing. This stage we are writing topic sentences. In the topic sentence we shouldn't make it to broad, narrow, or vague. Also in your topic sentence there is the subject and the focus.

    1. You wont be losing your friends, they will still be around. Moving is not fun a lot of times but think of all the friendships you will make. If you didn't move around you wouldn't have met the people you do have in your life.

    2. I agree that a narrative essay should be told in a chronological order, because a narrative essay is like a story. If the author did not write a narrative essay in a chronological order, then the essay would be very confusing. Also, I do not think that you will lose your friends, because as I always say, "True friendship never really fades."

    3. I can't really imagine having to constantly start over with friendships so I would definitely like to hear about your topic and the details helping to expound upon it.

  11. Narrative essay is story telling.Today we learned about writing topic sentences. Learning how to write them is important. It can't be too broad, nor can it be too vague. It has to be workable. Topic sentence sets a foundation for the paragraph that you are about to write. You have to make sure that you support it with relevant details. I had a hard time figuring out the topic sentence is effective or ineffective.

    3. No worries Ziggy, after going back and reviewing what was discussed, I too had a hard time figuring out whether the topic sentence was effective or ineffective. But as Larrisha pointed out, I guess that is where supporting details come into play.

  13. A narrative essay is where the writer tells a story based on sequence of events. It should have a purpose and a clear point of view.

The topic that I chose is a dangerous experience that changed my life.

Today, we were given writing exercises and a daily brain stretcher. Going over the second stage of writing helped me remember how to write a strong thesis.

    1. Brittney, I believe that your topic choice would be an interesting narrative to read! Narrative essays also show a certain pace within the story and provide appropriate details. Writing a thesis must be a difficult area of writing for most people.

    3. I agree that a narrative essay should have a purpose. If a narrative essay did not have a purpose, then there would be no point to writing a narrative essay. Also, I think that if an author does not have a purpose when writing a narrative essay, the audience will not enjoy the author's work.

    3. I was going to pick all about me as a topic too, but I think we have an another writing essay for all about me, so I did not choose. But, I really want to hear your story soon.

  15. I think narrative essay is similar as descriptive essay. The description and the conversation are more important than logical construction in narrative essay. Today, we learned about topic sentences. we underlined some parts of sentences if we found subjects and focuses, and distinguished sentences either effective or ineffective.

    1. I like what you wrote about a narrative essay being similar to a narrative essay. Whereas the description's and the conversation's within each particular essay are more important than their logical construction. Or at least that is how I interpreted what you wrote.

    2. I choose an embarrassing experience for my narrative topic because I have the most embarrassing story.

  16. As my classmates have said, a narrative essay is one in which its sole purpose is to tell a story. If I were to write a narrative essay, the first topic I'd choose is "an occasion when you experienced rejection". I'd only write about that if we didn't have to share it with the class though. Since the probability of us sharing our essays is greater than the alternative, I'd choose a safe topic like… "a significant misunderstanding" because my life is full of misunderstandings.

I enjoyed our activities today because they were definitely helpful. Topic sentences are just sentences that explain the main idea of what you're talking about in that paragraph or essay. What I learned was how to determine whether sentences were effective or ineffective. I guess I subconsciously knew since I answered correctly but I felt like I was guessing. At least I'm sure now.

  17. A narrative essay basically tells a story in the writer's own words, often involving the writer's personal mood, experiences, perspectives, feelings, etc. Often enough, narrative essays tend to be of a very personal nature, allowing it to be a captivating read.

As for which narrative essay I would choose to write about, I'd have to relate back to that on a later time. Most of the of the topics mentioned are intriguing to me, but for obvious reasons I can not write about all of them. So I'd like to take a little more time to decide which topic I'd write about.
