  1. Like free-writing, a descriptive essay allows greater freedom in one's ability to write through concise, expressive composition. Like poetry and art, descriptive essays allows writers to better paint in their reader's mind, a vivid picture of their composition. Descriptive essays are detail oriented with the goal of generating vivid images and/or emotions from their readers. It stands to resonate impressions of what is being discussed. And not just general impressions for that matter; but of specific details that highlights what is being discussed. Descriptive essays are essential in creating a mental image of what is being read, and how they are understood.

Personally, I think that descriptive essays are romantic. Such essays grab hold of their topic and caress every sub-topic with it's vivid descriptions and concise details. It engulfs what is being composed, strips it bare to its natural form, before ever-so-distinctively dressing it up, igniting both emotions and imagination. To an extent, I think descriptive essays seduces one's mind and emotion rather beautifully.

    1. As for which descriptive topic I would choose from the list provided.. Well, they are all interesting topics, but most of which are related to events and experiences that took place a while back. I'd like to write about something fresh and exciting, and so I'd choose the topic "My friend." Although I'd make "friend" plural and write a descriptive essay about the first 3 new friends I've made in this class; Dan, Nickie and Larrie. They are a comically interesting bunch whom I'm fortunate to be numbered among their list of friends.

    2. I completely agree because the goal of a descriptive essay is to print a image in your head about a specific topic. A descriptive essay allows a reader to know what the writer is thinking and his feelings about a topic. A descriptive essay gives us an impression about the writer.

    3. Alex, my friend your comment is an excellent example of descriptive paragraphs. Your details are straight to the point. As you transit to the second paragraph it gets personalized which got me more interested. If your comment was a summary to a book, I would totally buy it and read it.

    4. Mr. Alex, first of all, I agree with you. Secondly, in addition to Ziggy's reply above, your comment is an example of descriptive paragraph.

    5. Thank you Jonah, Ziggy and Dan for your feed-backs. They are genuinely appreciated.

This last bit is in response to the last portion of this blog's required tasks; which is my reflection on today's class activities. Today's class activities was a bit laid back as I am gradually grasping the mood and settings of the class and those involved. Among the things discussed were brainstorming, clustering, gathering information and narrative essays. The first 3 mentioned concluded our discussion of stage one, of the writing process. The narrative essay discussed is the 2nd essay out of the 4 that we'll be tested on this semester. Towards the end of the class, I got to show and explain to the class my work in relation to clustering. A bit nerve racking because the whole "double bubble" kept getting me a bit tongue-tied. All in all, it was an enjoyable and beneficial day at class.

    6. I agree that descriptive essays allow greater freedom in free writing than other modes of writing. I think that this is so, because descriptive essays ask the writer to compose on what they know, rather than what they do not know, as most descriptive essays focus on personal experiences. Additionally, I liked how you incorporated the workings of the descriptive essay into your definition of descriptive essays.

  2. As we discussed in class, a descriptive essay is a writing genre where the writer is asked to describe any topic of their choice. I think that descriptive essays are fun to write and interesting to read because we get to share our experiences with other people. Reading descriptive essays is just as interesting because we get a glimpse into someone else's life and what that experience was like from their point of view.

    1. I agree with Nicole descriptive essays are interesting to read because we get to hear a writers point of view or experiences. Descriptive essays are fun to write because we get to voice out our thoughts and experiences. In a descriptive essay its coming from our point of view.

    2. I agree that reading descriptive essays is interesting. I assume that reading descriptive essays are more interesting to read, because good descriptive essays are filled with vivid imagery that helps the audience to become immersed in author's writing. I think that writers who want to compose a good descriptive essay should write about an experience, object, or person that they are very passionate about, as they will be able to make their writing become "animated."

    3. I agree that a descriptive essay is interesting to read. It is a personal experience from a person's point of view. It is also one the most enjoyed modes of writing.

    4. I must agree with your expansion on descriptive essay; most especially the part where you wrote, "I think that descriptive essays are fun to write and interesting to read because we get to share our experiences with other people." Descriptive essays are fun to write indeed, and especially because, and as you stated, "we get to share our experiences." And in retrospect, they are interesting to read because they are mainly personalized topics. Well said.

    5. I enjoy writing describe essays the most. Writing descriptive essays I usually put my emotions into the essay. Since everyones emotions are different towards subjects I love to voice mine in the essays.

  3. A descriptive essay is a essay that describes an specific topic. A descriptive essay can describe a person, place, thing, or idea. The descriptive essay topic I would chose would be a happy moment in my life. I would chose this because I want to talk about one of the happiest moments in my life. In today's activities we learned how to cluster and list. The stage one of the writing process is freewriting, brainstorming, clustering, and gathering information. Clustering and listing is important for the writing process because it helps the writer come up with main ideas.

    1. You strike me as an attentive person, which is great. Your blog is concise and rather fitting to what was captured in class today. Reading it reminds me of what you wrote in response to my blog, and I quote: "A descriptive essay allows a reader to know what the writer is thinking and his feelings about a topic. A descriptive essay gives us an impression about the writer." I like how you broke down the writer, and painted a vivid picture of what a descriptive essay accomplishes for the writer. Great Job!

    2. I'm with you about clustering. Clustering is a great help. It helps you organize effectively. In the end, you pop the bubble with the ideas and turns it into sentences which will eventually create great essay.

      Delete
    3. Since you are writing about a happy moment in your life it should be easy for you to write about it. I haven't done clustering or listing since elementary school and I am glad that we revisited that because it help me get other ideas to help describe the main idea.

  4. A descriptive essay captures the essence of a certain topic. Descriptive essays uses words to form a photo in our mind. It allows a person to share a personal experience or feeling. A descriptive topic that I chose is my friend. The reason I chose this topic is because it allows me to talk about someone that I know and has had an impact on my life. I believe that descriptive essays are one of the most widely used modes of writing.

    4. I like how you simplified what a descriptive essay is when you said; "Descriptive essays uses words to form a photo in our mind." Very direct, short and to the point. I like that. But before that, you wrote; "A descriptive essay captures the essence of a certain topic." Emphasis on "essence of a certain topic." I think you nailed it right there with the word "essence." A rather passionate approach to the topic. Good job on thinking outside the box.

  5. A descriptive essay is an essay in which its purpose serves to paint a vivid picture in one's mind, using one's choice of words, and the arrangement of those words. If I were to choose to write about any of those topics, I would choose either sports at school or falling in love. Although "sports at school" would be my primary topic, because I am so familiar with that topic, "falling in love" would just be my alternative topic.

The exercises we did today teaches us to take all our scattered thoughts, jot them down, and to have them organized so that our ideas in our essay, when we write our essay, will be just as organized.

    2. I agree that a descriptive essay's main purpose should be to paint a vivid picture in another person's mind. Furthermore, I like how you pointed out how not only words are important, but that the arrangement of words are important as well. After all, the author should be coherent when he or she writes any kind of work.

    4. Nicole, you have an excellent explanation of a descriptive essay. One must focus solely on the choice of word and coherence of what he or she writes. It helps contribute to the bigger picture.

  6. Descriptive essays are one of my strong points. I want my readers and listener's in class to visualize what I felt in the moment. As a reader and listener myself, I would want to visualize their story and experience. Descriptive essays go very well with stories and experience and it brings them to life.

    2. Ziggy my man, I think that deep down you are poetic. I agree with what you wrote, especially the parts about you wanting the reader's and listener's to "visualize" what you were feeling at the moment; and wanting to visualize their story and experience as well. And that piece about descriptive essays bringing stories and experiences to life, that was truly poetic and on point. Props to you man!

    4. Descriptive essays are one of my stronger essays too, because I feel it's easy to capture a scene or a memory and put it into words rather than gathering facts and forming a solid opinion.

    2. Good job on simplifying what a descriptive essay is. A style, a form of writing that describes details.. With emphasis on "details." On point.

    3. I also think that detail is important. Otherwise, things would be so dull if we didn't notice the little things.

    4. When you write about computers I suggest that you use your other sense besides sight to describe the commuters. I think it is good you are writing about something in your field of study too.

  8. A descriptive essay is a type of story that allows the audience to use all of his or her senses. The descriptive essay is a good first genre for the writer, as the writer can write about what he or she knows about. Additionally, the writer can add in a variety of sensory details to make their work come alive, so the writer can engage his or her audience. Meanwhile, I would choose the topic of learning an instrument, a rainy day, an accident,or food. I would choose to write a descriptive essay about these topics, because I would like to write what I know about the most.

Furthermore, today in class, we could use the computer class, so we used our original classroom for instruction. I learned about the final steps of the first stage of the writing process. Today's class was insightful, as I learned a good method of brain storming, which I had not learned previously in high school. Prior to today's class, I did not know about actively using listing and clustering to make my ideas coherent. As we move onto the next stage of the writing process, I am positive we are one step closer to becoming better writers.

Rain is cool and refreshing.
