Reflection - June 12

Share your thoughts regarding today's activities. (Re: Writing Process: Stage One, Exploring/Experimenting/Gathering Information)

  1. In today's class session we participated in doing a free writing activity. I think I can come up with topic and ideas better than I can put them into words. I like that we write. It helps me to think and some times remember good times that I've had. Oh, even the ones too, but that's okay. I hope you guys are enjoying this class as much as I am.

    1. I agree with this because I can write down my thoughts better than talking about them out loud. I also can come up with topics better when I put them in words. Free writing helps me come up with ideas.

    2. Free writing helps me to put my thoughts into words. This activity challenged to me to make sentences instead of lists. These writing exercises proves how much we can do, and this is only the beginning.

    3. Just like you, free writing also gives me flashbacks about the good times of my life. By the way, I am enjoying this class very much.

    4. Sometimes it is hard to get your ideas on paper. We have this great idea in our brain but our hand are to slow to keep up with our brian so we end up loosing the idea.

    5. Hello Larrisha, yes I am enjoying this class. I like learning at a fast pace.

    6. Larrisha, seems like you are definitely enjoying the class, which is great. I too enjoy the fact that we write, just wish we had more time to do so. But with free-writing and its loose method's of composition, writing comes more natural.. At least I think so. I too am enjoying the class.

    8. I feel like that too. In my head it sounds amazing and then when I put it on paper.......... I don't even know.

      Delete
    9. I know how that feels, to have so many ideas buzzing in your head and then totally blanking out when you look at the paper.

      Delete
    10. I'm enjoying this class more than I thought I would be. Your personality and character is definitely a contribution to that enjoyment.

    11. Simply put its writers block, or when you have that tip of the tongue phenomenon.. Takes up time when writing times essays.

  2. I actually don't mind free writing because I journal everyday anyway. I feel sometimes my writing is as chaotic as my brain. I am constantly thinking about things but will bounce from one thought to another. This is why free writing is something I do enjoy. I am trying to get all my work done before I leave so I have nothing to do because tomorrow is my birthday and my friends are taking me out to celebrate tonight and my husband is taking me out tomorrow night!

    1. I believe owning a journal is a great idea. We watch our writing improve and it is a healthy way to get things off one's mind. I hope everyone enjoyed free writing just as much as Heather and I have!

      Delete
    2. I agree because journal writing is like free writing. Free writing helps us put down all our main ideas.

      Delete
    3. I love journals but I can't help but notice that I become redundant in my journals. It's as if everything I talk about gravitates towards whatever I'm passionate about at the time. I also look back at my journals and just laugh at how embarrassing I think I was.

      Delete
    4. I dont have the dedication and motivation to keep records of what I do on a daily. I love looking back and i believe its a great idea so hopefully one day I find time and leisure to do this.

  3. During today's session we were given our daily brainstretcher activity. Today was also the day we were given a free writing activity. I rarely exercised this activity and it never occurred to me how much I can write about a simple topic. Although, there were grammatical errors and my thoughts were not so organized, the topic I wrote about still had meaning to me. I'm glad transitioning into college has been easy for me than I thought.

    1. I agree. I thought transitioning into college would be a little more difficult, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that transitioning has not been hard. Also, I think that making mistakes is alright when a person is writing, because s/he can always go back and revise their work, and a grammatically incorrect message with meaning is better than a "perfect" message without meaning.

      Delete
    2. Also making mistakes is a great way to pin point what you need to work on. There is always room for improvement. :)

  4. In today's activities we did Free Writing. Free Writing is an exercise in which the writer puts their first thoughts on paper. Free Writing is one of the first things a writer does when starting an essay. After thinking of a topic to write the writer free writes. Free writing is a good way to brainstorm and practice writing.

  5. I liked today's freewriting activity even though I might not be the best writer. I think that freewriting like we did today helps get our thoughts out and kind of takes the weight of all those thoughts and puts it onto paper. I love that we can voice our unfiltered thoughts about a certain topic even if I can't write or type as fast as I think.

    1. I am in full agreement when it comes to free-writing. Especially and as you mentioned, the writer's ability to voice their "unfiltered" thoughts. This is by far my favorite style of writng.

      Delete
    2. I agree when it comes to free-writing. It helps me voice my thoughts. Free writing helps me write down all my thoughts.

      Delete
    3. Unfiltered thoughts can definitely help in some scenarios. Unfiltered thoughts have helped me tremendously in starting an essay.

      Delete
    4. I love the way you interpret free writing. Also I can't write quickly so it makes it a little difficult to free write all my ideas that come to mind.

      Delete
    5. Free writing is a great way to stimulate creative thoughts. Additionally, free writing is a great way to put a jumbled mess of creative thoughts into a coherent piece of work. Even if we cannot write as fast as we think, I think that free writing helps to keep our concentration on one topic of writing, instead of jumping around all over the place.

      Delete
    6. In addition to Ziggy's reply, it helps me filter "unfiltered thoughts".

      Delete
    7. I always think faster then I can write/ type. so a five paper essay in my head, would be like a two page on paper.

      Delete
    8. I can write down my thoughts pretty fast but it will be all jumbled. I will also remember stuff that I want to include in spots, so I always have arrows pointing to insertion points.

  6. Today's agenda is free writing. We chose a topic and wrote about whatever comes to mind based on that topic.

    1. Thank you Dan for this short and brief summary.

    2. You are too funny Dan. I like how you took the initiative to comment on your own blog. I'm not "laughing out loud" but I am definitely laughing..

    3. I just noticed this, comedian in the class!

      Delete
    4. I do like free writing, but I do not like to write based on the topic given to us. But it will different if I like the topic.

      Delete
  7. I can't stress enough how similar this class is to my AP English class that I recently took. We would do journals every class. The difference is that my high school class was extremely independent. We get assigned our work and we do them. I'm not used to sharing all our work and having to depend on each other to get through an English class. Free writing is so much more fun than writing about assigned topics that we would probably bs if we weren't familiar with them.

    1. I agree with this because free writing is so much more fun than writing about assigned topics. Free writing helps me express my thoughts. When we are assigned an specific topic it's harder for me to write down my ideas.

      Delete
    2. Its great seeing students like you who don't procastinate when it comes to academics. Being at such a young age and making this transition into college. I agree, free-writing is a whole lot more fun compared to the other forms of writing.

      Delete
    3. Yes, free writing it is much fun. I had the same problem that you had in high school. 90% of the time my essays were BS because i wasn't familiar with the subject. So, Good to know that I am not the only one who did that.

      Delete
    4. AP Classes are usually college level but I think that taking it in high school kind of helps the transition. I also agree with you because i'm not used to sharing my work either, but only because we all don't know each other that well.

    5. Just hearing all these posts about high school makes me feel old. I have been out of high school since 1996. I failed my senior year english but so did half the senior class. We all graduated from summer school. Where I received a 93 to pass the class.

      Delete
    6. Actually I also had similar assignment like free writing in the beginning of the every class during the high school. Even that was free writing I did not really liked it. But the free writing we did in this class was fun.

  8. For today's class, we read a passage about free writing from the textbook. We then did an activity that reinforced today's lesson about free writing, which helped me to learn how to free write better. Today's lesson taught me how to write creatively. Also, I visited the Writing Center today for the first time, and I am glad to know that I have help whenever I need it. We also did a brain stretcher activity, and I chose an interesting looking postcard about doves.

    1. Today, I surprised myself on how much I can write about a topic in matter of ten minutes. For once, I did not feel so pressured when I wrote. Words the flowed onto my paper.

    2. I really like the way you wrote your passage in this comment. The structure of the passage is very smooth. I shall use your passage for future reference. Only if you don't mind?

    3. I think free writing is something people need to practice. Free writing is like a form of brainstorming. Our brainstorming activities help us with our free writing.

    4. Free Writing-> Brainstorming-> helps us organize the ideas

  9. Free writing assignment was awesome. Free writing helped me release all the ideas in my mind. Some of my classmates had great experience that they shared with the class. I wish I could experience what they experienced. I believe free writing will improve my writing skills in the future.

    1. I believe that sharing what we write down on paper helps us form a class bond. We learn through each of our personal experiences. It's good to know we are all in this together.

    2. I agree that free writing will improve our writing skills in the future. Free writing helps us learn that writing can, and is, fun and meaningful. Free writing is an excellent first step to writing future essays or writing more creative works.

    3. Ziggy, I could not agree more. Thank you for sharing all the ideas you have released to the class today.

  10. Free writing was the topic for today. Because I like to write lists, I'm not a big fan of free writing. When I free write I'm all over the place and I sound sloppy. I only like to free write when I'm writing something short. Other then that I don't like to free write. Overall today's class was a good experience .

    1. I agree because when I free write it seems very sloppy. I like to be organized when I write. Also when I free write it seems like I need to be more descriptive.

  11. I enjoy free writing. This gives me the opportunity to freely verse what I am think. In stage one we are not worried about grammar, spelling, and organization. Being in stage one gives us to just countine writing with out t making sense at the time. Also I wish i picked a different topic for the free write. I chose why college education is important I wish I wrote about an important event in my youth; I would have written about the championship game I had for soccer and the winning pk shot I did.

    1. I like free writing, as well. It gives us a chance to choose a topic that we actually want to write about, so we write better, because we know about, or are interested in, the topic. Additionally, I should have chosen another more meaningful topic, as well.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I enjoy free writing too. That soccer story would have been interesting though.

      Delete
    3. Wow, you played soccer? That is awesome Lauren. I would have enjoyed hearing about that. I too enjoy free-writing, particularly its loose method's of composition. It enables us to simply lay out our thoughts, ideas, experiences and feelings, without the constant worrying about grammar, punctuation's, etc.

Next time, do share your soccer stories. Cheers!

      Delete
    4. I thought your topic was good, but I do love a good soccer story. you're right about free writing though, it's carefree

      Delete
    5. Please do write about your sports-related stories should we ever have another free writing session! I'd love to hear about the championship game you played against Southern this year!

      Delete
    6. Writing gives us a chance to write about so many things. I do hope to hear your soccer story. All three of my kids play soccer.

    7. I agreed with heather's writing, I want to hear your soccer story too!. Glory soccer :)

  12. Ahh.. Free-writing. I just love it! The first word did it for me, "free." Who doesn't enjoy the ability to do things freely? I know I do. And with free-writing, the method's in which one is allowed to write suits me perfectly. I think free-writing is as close as one could get in describing the way I write. More than any method of writing, this is the one I am most familiar with. So I truly did enjoy class today.

  14. Today's class consisted of a daily brain stretcher and a free writing activity. I personally love to free write because it allows me to let my thoughts and opinions flow on paper without interruption.

    1. I agree with this but I notice that when I do free write, my ideas are all over the place. My free writing is similar to my story telling - jumping from one thing to another then back to that first thing.

    2. That is why we need a brainstorming and clustering before write something.

    3. Agree with you Brittney. I like writing but I do not like to think about anything but write my ideas down.

  16. Gathering information/free-writing- it helps write down all the ideas without thinking about any grammar error, punctuation, or comma splices. I like free writing because I do not need to worry about any grammar.
